when i read the summary of this book, i assumed that i was in for a heartfelt tale of male bonding that comes to a crashing halt from some sort of tragic death - cancer, suicide, a car accident, etc, etc. but i was pleasantly surprised that this book actually didn't go the predictable route in the slightest. karl was an endearing, albeit slightly simple boy and our narrator, whose name you actually never learn, was compelling somehow, i actually just wanted to read all about him and his thoughts and feelings on things, no matter what he was talking about. their relationship formed in a quiet, witty comfort, and i actually just... liked this book. i don't know what else to say about it, really, i just liked it, and i liked the characters, especially the ones who were introduced toward the later end of the book.
